Our aim is to support any cat or dog in need in Bulgaria with medical costs, vaccines, castrations, rehoming, adoptions, fosters and general support where we can.
Bulgaria is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq miles), Bulgaria is Europe’s 16th largest country.
Bulgaria is not an animal friendly country and the situation is distressing. Despite recent changes in animal cruelty legislation there is no authoritative organisation to ensure that these laws are adhered to. There is a huge problem with stray dog and cat overpopulation. For the capital (Sofia) alone, estimates range between 8,000 to 10,000 stray dogs. The result is countless stray animals struggling to survive on the streets every day across the country. Conditions for street dogs are hard. Apart from deliberate abuse, they face starvation and freezing in the Winter and dehydration in the Summer.
It is a sad fact that people living Bulgaria particularly in rural areas are not emotionally involved with their animals, nor do they take their animals to a vet for medical attention. If a sick animal is lucky, it will survive disease and injury on its own, if not the animal will die.
Michelle and Barry run Help Bulgaria Cats and Dogs. They moved from the UK to Bulgaria around 2009, but once there, saw the plight of these poor animals, and decided to take action to help them. Our other main volunteers are Toni, Jan, Paul, and Joni along with many others all of whom dedicate their spare time to helping us. We now have over 300 animals in our care. Some are with Michelle, Barry and Joni but many more are at KitKats a private kennels who are large enough to hold more than 200 rescues we currently have. Sadly with numerous cruelty cases on going on a daily basis clinic bills urgently need paying so we can get animals treated. Urgently we need to make payments and clear the outstanding debts of the kennel fees which is a huge problem with so many dogs in our care.
We at Help Bulgaria Cats and Dogs strive daily to help tackle the problem of stray cats and dogs. We can only do that though with your support. Please help us in any way you can to help us make a difference.
